The Salon Graveyard: How they used to look

Long before the click and go websites, there were only a handful of brick and mortar shops to offer ecommerce never mind online appointments and selling hairdressing online. Today we look back at our salon journey and how our e-commerce salons paved the way through the 21st century.

The Big Scissor Company – 1997

Did you know that Alan’s original salon website first went live in 1997 and it was full on! Designed and built by Alan himself the salon website had all important online booking line, told the story of the salon, communicated with the clients through e-zines, advertised stylists jobs and more!

Hairee.com – 1999 – The Voice of the Hair Salon Owner

Frustrated by the poor advice from the sales reps and men in grey suits from outside of the salon industry who never owned a shop in their lives, a new website called Hairee.com was born. It was truly a voice of the hair industry, rebellious, against the rules, in fact, Alan even became a WANTED man for exposing certain industry BS! 😉 Just as it shows in the picture!

Like today, the website had e-shop packed with books, manuals, and really helpful salon management tips and hey it even had a flashy, rolling banner going across, cool or not! 😉

Also, the proof of who was the original creator of The Salon Column Builder and the SuperStylists long before they became ripped off and copied a thousand times over 😉

Hairee.com – 2004

SalonPunk.com – 2007

Now sometime in the year 2007, Alan lost the domain 🙁 and the guy who got hold of hairee.com domain wanted a LOT of money
for it :). Undeterred by the challenge, a new website, even punkier and cooler has emerged, long live www.salonpunk.com.

Bootcamps and salon mentor graveyard – circuit 2001

It started in Latvia, swept away through the all corners of the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, The United States in fact, 6x around the world mentoring, teaching and training a new generation of salons.

With today’s click and go high-resolution selfies and check me in and Like me, Unlike me world, it’s easy to forget the humble beginnings of the online world for the brick and mortar salons in particular. Although they looked simplistic, they have all paved the way to today’s exciting e-commerce of today. So RIP our salon websites, you have paved a way for a new generation of websiters.

I married into hairdressing 9 years ago so im not a hairdresser, when i lost my job in the down turn and my wife was looking to sell her salon after having our first child, it was really rough, i came across some of Alan stuff online and joined his membership site on monthly payment thing

Hi Alan The way I see it as we begin our journey through 2016 is it’s going to be an even tougher challenge being a salon owner, manager, beauty therapist or stylist and its definitely going to be even more of a challenge as we approach 2017.The fact is our clients are bombarded with so much confusing information and marketing which quite often makes us feel misled or treats us like we are total idiots!So its no surprise that we are becoming meticulous where we spend our hard earned cash… It’s one of the reasons that reviews have become so popular because people are becoming more and more careful when they choose anything from a hairdressing salon to where they should buy their food!I see so much junk and rehashed and untested garbage that salon owners have been told to use in the salons that simply makes me feel despair because I know is just not going to work.

I signed up for all of Alan’s courses (e-books) after taking on a dying salon taking £300 per week. that was in may 02 ,9 months later I am now expanding into the empty shop next door. since putting all of Alan’s ideas (and a few of my own) into operation I am now unable to fit all of my new clients into my present salon and taking more money in one day than I used to take in a week, this is just with myself 2 other stylists and 2 juniors working.So…. if anyone has any doubts about any of Alan’s ideas and courses just re-read the above a couple of times and get out your credit card and sign up.

Been busy with your material.

This is what I think about the material. The first moment when I started to download it I know it was the right thing.
I felt huge inspiration. This material is really important for me cause I am working in a village, that means you gotta get the clients to get there.

Everything was there, but it was really one thing that I felt was missing.
You got the voucher and ads. But when you open a new small salon in a village you need to make flyers and put them in the mailboxes, not just when you open like 4 times a year.

Everything in the package is so great I just would like to see ideas about flyers for the villages hair salons.
This is what I did already. I used your Idea about recommend a friend, but I did it a little bit different. I used my business cards and on the backside I printed the offer, I give my clients that like 10 each and I didn’t use off on service. I called places where you buy hair products and asked them if they had something they wanted to get rid off so I could buy them cheap and I told them my idea of giving them away.

I bought stuff for 10 Swedish crowns like 10 dollars each I mean brands that people know shampoo gel, hairspray everything. so I give them one product for every new client. So the women that works in our food store give them out to nearly everyone she knows. Of course I have done her hair already.

I gave her limit time of course. So I ended up with 1 dollar each new client and I didn’t lowered my price.
I forgot of course the friend also get a product it cost me 2 dollars sorry. I will let you know more what I am doing. But Alan if you got an idea about the flyers please let me know. That was the only missing link the way I see it.

I have found Hairee.com to be a wealth of information.
As a new salon owner I needed information on how to do a better job of marketing & I have been able to try some of the ideas from Salon Column Builder. I have 2 established stylists & a new one to our salon & I did not know how to start building a clientele for her. I have tried a couple of the ideas from the column builder & it is starting to pay off already. I just need to persevere & hopefully she will also have a full column in the not too distant future!
