In 1989 I opened my first tiny hairdressing salon of just 250 sq. ft. Within 6-months I almost closed due too the fact I hadn’t got a clue what I was doing. Within 18-months I had not only moved into a 2,000 sq. ft salon but I had taken the number one position in a small town with over 35-salons. My salon was so busy it enabled me to do things most salon owners I knew couldn’t. I managed to get off the shop floor and even build myself a huge 5-bedroomed barn conversion sitting in around an acre of its own land. My success was so great that I also managed to have a couple of German cars on the drive. A classic car and at least three foreign holidays a year with my family.
Up until the day I sold my salons it was packed from morning till night. I had waiting lists for my 16 staff. The phone never stopped and I had created the ability to walk into a dead salon and within an hour or so manage to have the salon booked up for the day.
Why am i telling you that?
Not to show off but to share with you a secret of my salons success and it was this.
Speed.
First I was never in a position to sit and wait forever. I needed things to happen fast. I needed that ability to arrive at the salon, and if the salon was dead I needed to fill my salon very quickly (in hours).
I managed to do that. If I arrived at my salons and it was dead I could guarantee by 10am the salon would be as good as booked up.
Systems.
The second reasons I could do this was simple. I had taken the time to work out simple systems. In other words things I could repeat daily if I had to. Things also that had proven themselves to work. No fluff or nonsense just business building tools that would work.
And they did work.
Colour was well over 65% and we were killing it.
New clients had gone through the roof to the point we had to put them on a stand-by list
Our appointment book was always booked up – and when it wasn’t we had the ability to fill it in hours
We had become the towns only specialist salon
Our salon prices in some cases were now 3x higher than anyone else

Yes it was.
At the time the interest from the companies on what my salon was doing was huge. No one had really seen a new salon do what I was doing so fast. I began to get asked to share my expertise with other salons. Today that has never stopped. I speak to salon owners almost weekly. This it to help, advice and show them Thor to grow their salons.

As time moved on with my own salons I decided to take everything I know – at least the easier things – and put them into one huge business building manual. I knew what I was a salon owner I would have loved something under the desk.
So that is what I did. I wrote down every word and packed them into one massive manual. I decided to name SX-21.
